The National Procurement Awards 2011

The National Procurement Awards 2011 took place before a packed audience of Ireland’s procurement professionals in the Burlington Hotel on 17th November.  Members of staff from the National Procurement Service (NPS) attended the awards having being selected as finalists in the category for ‘Innovation in Public Procurement’, for their website www.procurement.ie.

Guest of Honour, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Mr. Phil Hogan TD, addressed the audience saying that, “public procurement alone represented an investment of in excess of €15bn” last year and that it was therefore vital “that every euro spent on the taxpayer’s behalf is spent wisely.”

Green Public Procurement was also emphasized in his address as Mr. Hogan said, “as Minister with responsibility for the environment, I see the placing of sustainable development principles as being central to policy making across all sectors as a major priority”.  He added, “I want to see the public sector play an exemplary role in Green Public Procurement.”

The awards also saw the launch of the second National Procurement Survey.  Head of Accenture’s Supply Chain practice, Armin Samali said, “Accenture would like to congratulate all the winners at this year’s National Procurement Awards and we are very proud to be Main Partner for 2011. The second National Procurement Survey saw a 30% increase in participation by senior procurement professionals. The research findings clearly validated the crucial role which procurement continues to play in the sustainable recovery of the Irish economy through the high levels of procurement mastery that were evident. The trend to procure from Irish suppliers was most encouraging and will play its part in retaining and creating jobs in Ireland.“

President of the IIPMM, Dr. Paul Davis, in his opening address said that education was the key to ensuring that procurement professionals developed a long term strategic view of procurement, “The IIPMM is active in education through its programs that are delivered not just locally but globally, as we are the only purchasing and supply professional body offering a third level degree worldwide. The IIPMM has been instrumental in developing, with the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management, a global standard for education and professional qualifications.  It is clear to us that without well educated professionals, masters if you will, organizations will not get the long term strategic benefits from procurement.”
